Raising the Perfect Puppy

Raising the Perfect Puppy

While there is no promise that your puppy will be perfect, following these steps will surely to help build a positive bond and a good foundation for advanced training!

Step 1: Choose a puppy with good temperament. Everyone always chooses the excited puppy that comes barreling up to you, but the thing is, that puppy is most likely to hold that same level of energy as they age. Rather than choosing the crazy puppy that is jumping all over you, look for a calm puppy. This doesn’t mean you pick the scared puppy hiding in the corner, but the puppy that is curious yet reserved.

Step 2: Start training as soon as you get your puppy. This does not mean you immediately work a military heel, but you can start to work on basic commands such as sit and rewarding good behavior that you do not ask for. (Like calm energy while riding in the car.) The first few days together are exciting, you have a new puppy, and your pup has found its forever home. Interactions may feel like fun and games, but your puppy is busy learning what to do and what not to do, whether you realize you’re teaching him or not. If you’ve taken a very young puppy into your home, it will feel vulnerable. Provide your pup security, safety, and a routine, as well as plenty of love for a smooth transition.

Step 3: Potty training! Consistency is key. The fewer accidents your puppy is allowed to have, the faster they will be potty trained. Set a potty schedule and stick to it. Email julia.price@trustyourpup.com for a potty training schedule and more tips!

Step 4: Crate Training – Your puppy’s crate is a place of security, comfort, and quiet. The crate will help to keep your home safe from puppy-created mayhem. Encourage your puppy to go into their crate using treats, toys, and bully sticks! Puppies younger than six months old should not be crated for more than two or three hours, except at night.
